A trip to visit the Rafflesia (biggest flower in the world)

We had been to Cameron highlands more than 10 times since young, as it is a must visit place in Malaysia. However, we made our Cameron highlands trip a little different on the valentines day this year (14 Feb 2016).

We went to Cameron highlands just for 2days 1 night to take a rest, but, we realize that it had become a commonplace to us and we decided to hike the mountains to see the Rafflesia. We took the half day tour which cost us RM 60 per pax for 4 hours hike. Understand from the tour agent that there is currently only 1 agency that has this tour, which is the Hilltop adventure group. Here is the link to their various package.

Do call the agent beforehand, as they will inform whether there is Rafflesia in the mountains the day before.

The reason, because Rafflesia's life span is only 2-3 days during their blooming stage. The agency will get the orang asli (local aborigines) and the dogs to find the Rafflesia, once found they will only bring the group to hike.

Here are the pictures of the hike. The hike was not easy to us, as there was a lot of leeches and it was slippery after a day of rain. We cover ourselves with long pants and shoes and socks, but we still got bitten by the leeches. But, it was worth the hike after we saw the largest flower in the world.

The dog was one of our tour guide too

There was rapid river that we need to cross too, so we need to take off our shoes and walk through the river. At the end of the hike, all our socks and shoes were wet.

Finally arrive after 2 hours hike, there is another 2 hours hike to return to the base.
This is how the Rafflesia looks like from the inside.

We also got a chance to visit the local orang asli and to experience the blow pipe.

This was the 4 wheel drive that took us the base of the mountain.

The tour really drained our energy and we just went for our charcoal steamboat dinner and sleep away.
